Vladimar Putin thanks President Trump for CIA's help in stopping terror attacks

Russian President Vladimir Putin called President Donald Trump to thank him for critical CIA intelligence that foiled several planned bombings on Russian soil.

Russian president Vladimir Putin telephoned U.S. president Donald Trump on Sunday to thank him for information that allowed Russia to prevent a terrorist attack on its soil, Interfax news agency quoted the Kremlin as saying.

"The Russian president thanked his American colleague for the information passed on by the Central Intelligence Agency, which helped detain a group of terrorists preparing explosions in St. Petersburg's Kazansky Cathedral and other busy sites in the city", the Kremlin said in a statement.

The Federal Security Service said Friday that seven members of a terror cell had been detained for their involvement in the plot, and that "a significant amount of explosives", weapons and "extremist literature" were confiscated.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone conversation have welcomed the prevention of a terror attack in Russia as a positive example of bilateral cooperation.

The White House said the foiled attack could have killed "large numbers of people".

This is the second time in less than a week that two of the world's most powerful leaders have exchanged messages of praise.
