Flu season starting in earnest

The Arizona Department of Health Services has announced that the flu is widespread in Arizona with 2,629 more cases reported than past year.

City officials said there has been an increase in flu activity reported locally and across the nation.

The worst of flu season usually peaks in January or February, when kids are going back to school and people are going back to work after the holidays.

Due to the early increased activity this year, both in Kentucky and nationally, increased flu activity is anticipated to continue for several months.

Jenny Israel, head of children's public health nursing, Hywel Dda University Health Board, explained why it's so important that eligible children receive the flu nasal spray vaccine.

"It is not too late to get a flu shot".

Doctors are urging those who have not gotten a flu vaccine to get one.

Glenda Perez made sure her two young children got their flu shots.

"The actual vaccine effectiveness was overall about 33 percent", said Wu.

When exactly is flu season, anyway? Providence Centralia Hospital's emergency department saw three to four times more people who came in with the chief complaint of flu-like symptoms.

Public health officials recommend getting the flu vaccine to prevent the flu.

Opponents of the flu vaccine counter that life-threatening reactions can be caused by the shot, including brain inflammation and even death. "So if you're traveling to another part of the USA where there's a flu outbreak, the close proximity to people will contribute to the virus being transmitted".

MCMC said "although many of our staff are fortunate to enjoy excellent health, even healthy individuals can get very sick from the flu and spread disease to others" as the basis for its flu shot/masking protocol.

Flu symptoms often include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, chills and muscle aches, and thousands of people die each year because of the flu, mostly among elderly people, according to the press release.
