Move Over 2017, The Wolf Moon Is Here

Sky gazers will be able to see the first supermoon of the year Monday night, and it is set to the brightest one of the year, according to NASA.

The moon is called blue because it's the second full moon in the month and it's red because it's going to be eclipsed.

On January 31st, there will be a total lunar eclipse.

Tonight's full moon is the closest and brightest of the year.

The real star of the show, according to, is the lunar eclipse on January 31.

With the total eclipse, it will be a royal spectacle indeed, a "super blue blood" moon, NASA said.

At 5pm EST (22:00 GMT) the first moon of 2018 reached its perigee, the closest point in its orbit around the Earth at a distance of roughly 221,559 miles (356,565km).

Beach shack operators had complained about a lack of warning earlier this month, after a combination of cyclone Ockhi and Supermoon wrecked havoc on the beaches, with the rising water damaging several beach shacks and eroding beach stretches, popular with tourists. It will be a neat site to see if you can courageous the extreme cold tonight, because we have a nice snow pack outside, which will reflect a lot of the light from the moon. For example in US Mountain time (MST), the eclipse will begin at 4:48 AM, but as the full eclipse winds down, the moon will already be dipping below the horizon.

He said: "Supermoons occur when the full moon is at perigee".

The largest recent supermoon occurred in a year ago. The moon won't come that close to Earth again until November 24, 2034.

"As long as it's clear out, you'll have no trouble seeing the moon at all", she said.

In case you don't remember, a "supermoon" occurs when the moon appears bigger and brighter in the sky.
