There's Another Death from Flu in Oklahoma

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said up to half of all children who die as a result of the flu have no known medical condition that put them at higher risk for complications of the illness.

In Riverside County, the flu is not quite as widespread. About 2,500 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported the week of Christmas, bringing the number by the end of 2017 to almost 8,000, according to an Arizona Department of Health Services report.

Nationally, flu season has arrived stronger than projected, according to federal health officials. "They go through this antigenic change every year, so March is when they decide what's going into the vaccine and we start seeing the cases in September and October".

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday that there have been seven more flu deaths, raising this season's total to 20.

He added: "The most important thing is that if people think they've got it is to stay at home and look after themselves". The CDC also says 12 children have died from the flu this season and more than 2,400 people hospitalized.

Experts said flu season in Southwest Florida ends around April.

"It takes about two weeks for the flu shot to become maximally active so that you have the most benefits from it, but it's not too late, especially as we're seeing a great increase in the amount of flu that we're having", she said.

The CDC recommends that anyone over 6 months of age get a flu shot.

"We're about two weeks ahead of where we were previous year", she said. DHHS, per its privacy policy, declined to provide the gender, hometown and county of the victim. Marten said. "Patients experiencing acute symptoms should seek treatment at the nearest emergency department".
