BRO engineer killed, 8 missing in avalanche in J-K's Kupwara

A passenger vehicle carrying seven people was also swept away in the avalanche at the same spot on Friday.

"The driver of a passenger vehicle affected by the avalanche had escaped unhurt", Kupwara deputy commissioner Khalid Jahangir told Hindustan Times.

Nearly three hours after the avalanches, a seven-year-old was found alive and shifted to Kupwara hospital, from where he was referred to Srinagar for specialised treatment. However, according to a current report the three rescued have been identified.

The avalanche hit an area near Sadhna Top in Kupwara between 1515 hrs to 1530 hrs.

However, rescue teams of police and Army joined by locals have rescued a child and an elderly person and shifted them to hospital. A search and rescue operation has been launched, but fog and darkness are hampering the process.

Officials said that the Rashid is now undergoing treatment at District Hospital Kupwara while Bhat has been shifted to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment. Multiple avalanches struck Khoni Nallah this week and swept away nearly 10 persons. A Beacon officer's body was found on Friday evening, he said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has directed the Kupwara district administration to ensure all possible medical assistance to the injured in the accident.

The incident reportedly happened at 4 pm on the Sadhna Pass which is at a height of 3,000 metres in the Tangdhar region of Kupwara District. Conveying sympathies with the bereaved families, the Minister prayed for peace to the departed souls.
