Feinstein releases transcript of interview with Fusion GPS co-founder

The second involved a decision by Democrat Senator Diane Feinstein of California to release the Congressional transcripts of Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson.

Republicans in Congress have claimed that Steele's unverified dossier led the FBI to open its investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein released a transcript of the interview on Tuesday, after repeated disagreements with Republicans on the committee.

"The only way to set the record straight is to make the transcript public", she said in a statement.

In a 312-page transcript of Simpson's August 2017 interview with the Senate Judiciary Committee, Simpson's attorney also said it was risky to discuss the dossier's sources because its public release past year had already led to murder.

After Democrats began paying for the research, Fusion GPS hired Christopher Steele, a former senior officer with Britain's intelligence service, MI6, to gather intelligence about any ties between the Kremlin and Trump and his associates.

Grassley said the release could undermine attempts to interview other witnesses in the committee's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied allegations of meddling in the US election and Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Moscow officials.

Ms. Feinstein moved to do so without the committee's Republican chairman, Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, nearly certainly escalating partisan tensions on the committee.

"Her action undermines the integrity of the committee's oversight work and jeopardizes its ability to secure candid voluntary testimony", said Grassley spokesman Taylor Foy.

Simpson also testified that Steele told him the Federal Bureau of Investigation had similar intelligence from "an internal Trump campaign source" and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation "believed Chris' information might be credible because they had other intelligence that indicated the same thing and one of those pieces of intelligence was a human source from inside the Trump organization".

Two Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee are pushing Sen. "So, you know, that tells you something about somebody", Simpson said during the testimony, regarding Trump's relationship with Sater. Grassley and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-South Carolina, called last week for the Justice Department to launch a criminal inquiry into Steele. On Jan. 2, Simpson and fellow Fusion GPS co-founder Peter Fritsch called on congressional investigators to release their testimony.

Ms Feinstein said she released the transcript with the agreement of the other Democrats on the committee, to combat the "innuendo and misinformation" surrounding it. Steele "would say very generic things like I saw (the FBI), they asked me a lot of questions, sounds like they have another source or they have another source".
