7.6M Earthquake Shakes Country of Honduras

"Amazing trip to #Cancun ended last night with our condo shaking like insane as a result of an natural disaster off the coast of Honduras".

One of the strongest earthquakes to hit the Caribbean in modern times struck off the coast of Honduras yesterday, setting off tsunami warnings for several destinations including the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Jamaica and Mexico.

The epicenter of the quake was 125.4 miles north/northeast off the coast of Barra Patucca, Honduras and 25 miles from the Swan Islands, which only houses a small naval post. Tsunami warnings were put into effect after the natural disaster struck, but were ultimately canceled.

President Juan Orlando Hernandez tweeted that the emergency system had been activated and people should remain calm.

After the natural disaster, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an advisory, warning areas like Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands of a potential tsunami.

Tsunami sirens were heard going off along the coast of Belize shortly after the magnitude 7.6 quake hit northeast of Honduras.

A tsunami advisory signals a threat to those in or near water, as strong currents and waves could be unsafe.

Nine other earthquakes of magnitude 6 or larger have occurred within 400 km of the January 9, 2018 event over the preceding century.

The Caribbean is an active seismic zone, and the quake that ravaged Haiti in 2010 registered at a 7.0 on the Richter scale.
