The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 Snow & Ice Team is actively monitoring an approaching winter storm system expected to arrive in western Kentucky Thursday night into Friday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning means a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is imminent for a certain location.

Winds at times could be damaging. High near 40. Breezy, with a northwest wind 10 to 20 miles per hour becoming north in the afternoon. The freezing rain window appears to only last a few hours, and looks less widespread for the time frame.

Citizens of Minden woke up to subfreezing temperatures Friday morning.

FRIDAY: Cloudy with rain.

Freezing rain is expected overnight and early morning Friday.

Places such as Little Rock, Arkansas, have already experienced this change. "Also, ice accumulations of.20" were reported in some areas.

Most of the areas that experience a wintry mix will also see that eventually change over to snow before the storm exits.

TUESDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy skies and snow flurries are possible, with a high temperature of 14 degrees.

At least three inches of snow has fallen across Allegheny County. Cape Girardeau County, Missouri has seen the most accumulation so far, with 2 to 4 inches of sleet staying put on top of a layer of ice. That could result in the movement and break-up of ice on area rivers and streams and cause ice-jam related flooding. Temperatures will remain warm in the 40s therefore no wintry weather is expected Friday.

41% of the US had snow on the ground this morning.

"Any pretreatment we would have applied with that rain, basically would have diluted then washed that off basically making that ineffective", Peek explained.

"Be prepared for a widespread, heavy and wet snowfall that will create hard travel conditions across the region", the weather service said.
