Bruno Mars crashes rap's big party at the Grammys

During a night full of provocative performances and political displays, the R&B singer won six trophies, including three of the Grammys' top honors: album of the year (24K Magic), record of the year (24K Magic) and song of the year (That's What I Like).

The industry seized on its annual gala to rally on behalf of the growing women's movement against sexual harassment, with pop singer Kesha delivering a fierce performance about her own abuse story. Dressed in white, they won over the audience while singing Kesha's "Praying" and hugged at the song's end as some audience members cried, including Hailee Steinfeld.

The best rap album category wasn't even created until 1995.

Much of the upset seemed to be centered on the fact that Lamar has yet to win album of the year, despite his numerous critically acclaimed projects.

Jay-Z, the leading nominee with eight, walked away empty handed Sunday - a year after his wife lost album of the year to Adele, causing fans and peers to criticize the Recording Academy for not properly rewarding Beyonce's bold "Lemonade" project. But Lamar tipped his hat to the elder star, declaring "Jay for president!" as he collected the best rap album award.

Americana favorite Jason Isbell picked up Best American Roots Song for "If We Were Vampires" and Best Americana Album for "The Nashville Sound", while Aimee Mann took home Best Folk Album for "Mental Illness".

Earlier in the ceremony, country singers Maren Morris, Eric Church and Brothers Osborne performed a moving rendition of Eric Clapton's Grammy winning "Tears in Heaven" as a tribute to the victims of a mass shooting at a music fest in Las Vegas previous year. "And to those who would dare try to silence us, we say, 'Time's up.'".

There were also posthumous awards for Leonard Cohen and actress Carrie Fisher, who won best spoken word album for the audio version of her memoirs, The Princess Diarist.

Other notable winners included Chris Stapleton for Best Country Album; the HBO documentary "The Defiant Ones" about Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine for Best Music Film; 2016 holdover "La La Land" won for Best Compilation Sountrack for Visual Media and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media.
