North Korea slams US as 'gross violator of human rights'

A Unification Ministry official said on Wednesday that coordination with the USA on the matter has not been finalized yet, adding it may be hard for the delegation to visit North Korea using a chartered plane.

In an interview with the BBC on Monday, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said that his agency was concerned that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may be mere months away from having full nuclear capabilities, able to launch a missile at any target in the U.S. in the very near future. More strikingly, Trump's speech took place shortly after news broke that Victor Cha, a Korea expert who worked under the George W. Bush administration, was no longer being considered for the role of U.S. ambassador to South Korea.

President Moon Jae-in has seen his support rate drop over his administration's response to North Korea's participation in the Games, especially after it made a decision to form a combined women's ice hockey team with athletes from the two Koreas for the Winter Olympics. He also cautioned that "complacency and concessions only invite aggression and provocation".

"We need only look at the depraved character of the North Korean regime to understand the nature of the nuclear threat it could pose to America and to our allies", he said. "I will not repeat the mistakes of past administrations that got us into this very risky position".

Washington issues an annual human rights report which consistently ranks the North among the world's worst offenders, but Pyongyang's document focuses exclusively on the US.

Trump's rhetoric was actually a notch down from his United Nations speech, where he famously mocked North Korean President Kim Jong-un as 'rocket man'.

North Korea test-launched three intercontinental ballistic missiles in 2017, and claims that it has a deliverable nuclear weapon that can hit the mainland United States.

He raised his crutches high when Trump introduced him.

Baik Tae-hyun, Spokesperson of Unification Ministry, told press that the US had given South Korea the green light to send the skiers following discussions between Seoul and Washington on the need to make sure the exchange did not violate sanctions.

"North Korea may have felt the burden of preparing for a massive event in the North within a short period of time", the official said, when asked about the government's assessment of the reason for the North's cancellation.

A so-called "bloody nose" attack would be created to send a message without sparking a wider war, but is regarded as one of the riskiest options open to the president. "And if Kim is unpredictable, impulsive and bordering on irrational, how can we control the escalation ladder, which is premised on an adversary's rational understanding of signals and deterrence?"
