Turkey neutralizes 950 terrorists in Syrian Afrin region

Turkey neutralizes 950 terrorists in Syrian Afrin region

The Turkish military campaign in Afrin and nearby regions was launched after the USA had announced its plans to train a 30,000-strong border force in northern Syria mostly from YPG fighters, which are considered as terrorists by Ankara.

Kurdish Defense Units have uploaded a video featuring the destruction of Turkish tank in Syria's northern district of Afrin to the Twitter account of Rojava Defense Units.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said France would have a "real problem" if the situation in Afrin turned out to be an "invasion operation".

The SDF confirmed clashes have taken place in the Bulbul area and reported they have destroyed a Turkish APC armoured vehicle "and killed everybody inside in an ambush in Qarnah village in Bulbul town".

A day before the operation in Afrin, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of working to create alternative government systems in Syria, which goes against its promises to respect the country's territorial integrity.

Erdogan's spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, told reporters that Turkish soldiers were there to protect the local people and that Ankara has had an "open-door policy" since the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011.

Syria condemned Turkish actions, mentioning that Afrin is an inseparable part of the country.

Ankara for years tolerated Washington's reliance on the Kurdish militias in the campaign against ISIL but after the group's defeat in Syria has grown increasingly vocal in demanding an end to American military support for them.

Of course not. In recent days, the YPG from time to time publish images of weapons that are used in the Afrin area against Turkish tanks and military.

But the PYD and YPG are also the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a designated terror group that has fought a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state.

According to Turkey, it is targeting the YPG, the main Kurdish militia in the area. Any armed conflict between USA and Turkish forces would likely involve proxy forces, armed and backed by Ankara and Washington, respectively, rather than American and Turkish troops trading fire, she said.

The accusation against the Turkish border guards comes amid rising tensions along the Turkey-Syria border as Turkey's military has moved into northern Syria.
