Wife of Barnaby Joyce 'devastated' by news of baby with ex-staffer

Barnaby Joyce has described the breakdown of his marriage as "one of the greatest failures in [his] life" but refused to answer questions about his relationship with a former staffer on the basis of privacy.

In October the high court ruled Joyce was ineligible to sit in parliament because he was a dual New Zealand citizen, one nine politicians thus far to resign or be forced out by a rigid but until recently little-enforced constitutional disqualification.

Natalie Joyce released a statement today, after 9NEWS confirmed the 50-year-old Nationals leader and his 33-year-old former press secretary, Vikki Campion, are expecting a baby within months.

Campion, a former journalist, left Barnaby Joyce's office in April to work for one of his close Nationals colleagues, the resources and northern Australia minister Matt Canavan.

Determined to get a more solid answer, Sales pointed out that Joyce was "the powerful boss and the woman was on your staff", hinting it was inappropriate, but he replied: "There was nothing beyond the consensual, this is a private matter". She is now no longer employed by the Turnbull government, according to The Daily Telegraph, after her contract ended in December.

Mr Joyce's wife Natalie has not been seen publicly with the Deputy Prime Minister since the Canberra Press Gallery Mid-Winter Ball in June previous year.

A friend of the Deputy Prime Minister said the pregnancy was shrouded in secrecy because he was concerned about the well-being of his daughters.

"The Labor Party has made no public statement about Barnaby Joyce's personal situation for the last six months, despite the fact it's been well-known in this building, and we're not about to start today", Bowen told journalists. But my criticisms of him are of his job.

"His personal situation is none of my business and, with respect, it's none of anyone else's business".

"I want to take about policy difference not personal lives".

Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne expressed sympathy for the Joyce family.

Mr Joyce, a Catholic and outspoken economic and social conservative, said he would "never vote against the view of the Australian people" before he abstained from the final vote on December 7. "I don't think it would be right for any other politician".

"I think it's a great pity that this has happened to Barnaby Joyce and his family and it must be very traumatising for everyone, made much worse by being publicised on the front page of the newspapers", he said.

After winning the by-election Mr Joyce told federal parliament his 24-year marriage was over.

He did, however, briefly acknowledge during the debate on the legislation that he had separated from his wife, the first public utterance of his marital issues.

Before working in Politics Vikki Campion worked as a journalist and deputy chief of staff of The Daily Telegraph.

Solo , well before the events of " Star Wars: A New Hope ", also talks of one day becoming the best pilot "in the galaxy". That's our first look at Thandie Newton's character, who looks to be part of the "crew" that Han and Chewbacca join.
