Trump offers condolences to Westerville police officers

Morelli was a member of the city's bike patrol unit.

The 911 caller had told a dispatcher there was a domestic disturbance at an address in the town of Westerville - then abruptly hung up.

Mobitzer calls the 39-year-old Morelli and 54-year-old Joering "true American heroes".

"The officers gave their lives in defense of others", Morbitzer said, struggling to keep his emotions in check. "This was their calling and they did it right", said Morbitzer, his voice halting and thick with emotion.

The suspect was taken into custody on the scene, though it is unclear how many people were injured in the attack, according to the news station. About an hour later, officials sent another tweet announcing the second death.

They were the first Westerville officers killed in the line of duty.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. about 15 miles northeast of Columbus.

The Fraternal Order of Police of OH asks anyone who wishes to support the families to donate at GoFundMe.com/FOPLodge9HelpFund. On Saturday, he pledged the full support of the Ohio Highway Patrol if it is needed.

Ohio FOP president Jay McDonald released the following statement: "This is just another grim reminder that police work has the potential for deadly danger every day".
