Upper Midwest preparing for wintry blast, up to foot of snow

The storm will come "as a low pressure system develops along an arctic front", the National Weather Service said. Another winter storm is forecast to paste the Midwest with heavy snow on Thursday and Friday. The snow will persist into Friday morning.

In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the city was prepared for three more rounds of snow through the weekend after crews dealt with 6 to 7 inches overnight Thursday.

Chicago could get around a foot of snow - 8 to 14 inches - by late Friday, and between 2 to 4 inches through the weekend, forecasters said.

The declaration means drivers can not park on city streets between 9 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Saturday.

Because of the timing, the evening commute Thursday shouldn't be impacted much, but Friday morning will be quite messy.

We are closely watching another storm system that will bring more snow to the viewing area Thursday night and Friday.

Meteorologists at Environment Canada expect the snow to begin to taper off sometime late this afternoon across the central region of the province.

A fast-moving storm is expected to drop up to 10 inches of snow Wednesday afternoon and evening in parts of western and central ME, with lesser amounts in eastern, coastal and northern parts of the state, according to the National Weather Service.

Northern Illinois closed its campus in DeKalb, and districts 427, 302, 424, among others were closed Friday in the DeKalb County area.

Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester could see from 3 to 6 inches, according to, and enough snow will fall around Albany, Burlington and Montreal to create hazardous driving conditions.

State Department of Transportation snow and ice operations will be deployed as conditions necessitate.
