Fat Tuesday arrived Saturday at the Columbia Mardi Gras Festival

It's not as wet as the weekend was but it will be far from a pleasant forecast for Mardi Gras, but at least it should be dry for the multitude of parades and celebrations.

Some people enjoying the Mardi Gras celebration at The Palace Grill in Santa Barbara were caught off guard when they learned the dates. This is all characteristic of the Zulu parade on Canal Street, Lasof said, where participants toss chocolate coins and beads into the air. I have written a lot here on this blog about the history of masquerade, most recently in the post J'Ouvert: Drums, Dress, and Resistance.

This year, Mardi Gras falls on February 13th.

More than 70 Mardi Gras themed floats will travel to the Briscoe King Pavilion, featuring a host of colorful characters in some of the best costumes you'll see this side of New Orleans. It came from the Acadians who fled English persecution in Canada and settled in South Louisiana; by the time they arrived, they were desperate for a good time.

They landed at a point near current-day New Orleans on 2 March and on realising it was the eve of the day of celebration back in France, made a decision to name the place Pointe du Mardi Gras.

Each year a celebrity is chosen to be "Bacchus" and ride the parade route as king of the Krewe of Bacchus. Each color has a special meaning: purple symbolizes justice, gold signifies power and green represents faith.

Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday in French, and it's a common way for people to enjoy Shrovetide.

Yet Okeanos - which Vennart joined in the early 1990s after being immersed in Cajun culture during his New Orleans medical residency in the late 1980s - stages its pageantry with plenty of flamboyance.

According to the official Mardi Gras New Orleans website, the first U.S. Mardi Gras occurred in Mobile in 1703 with a secret society, the Masque de Mobile, formed to organize the celebrations.

Area artists and musicians who started Durham's Mardi Gras celebration faced naysayers nine years ago. But, I think for each community that really celebrates it at this level, it's just a point of pride.

Over time the religious-inspired celebration - that also harkens back to pagan spring and fertility rites - became a cultural phenomenon where parties were especially boisterous in Brazil, Venice and New Orleans.

"I have heard of Mardi Gras but never celebrated it in the past", Chan said.
