US Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Preview and Prediction: USA vs. Slovenia

First, here's Slovenia's game-tying goal late in the third period.

Team USA still gains a point in the standings by making it to overtime. He is also the only former Olympian and led the 2006 Winter Games in scoring when the USA was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

With no National Hockey League players participating in the Winter Olympics for the first time since 1994, there is a bit of mystery surrounding the tournament as it begins on Valentine's Day. In four cases, players were pulled from their NCAA teams and classes to compete for their country, hearkening to the most famous of U.S. Olympic triumphs: the 1980 "Miracle on Ice".

Even though Team USA led 2-0 heading into the third period, Slovenia powered back to tie the game with fewer than two minutes remaining in the final period.

Slovenian's had lost all 5 games against the United States of America in prior tournaments and didn't step on the ice as favorites in this game either.

49ers Make Jimmy Garoppolo Highest Paid Player In NFL
It's very possible he could get a deal larger than Garoppolo's on the free agent market, which opens in March. Raj Mathai of NBC Bay Area was first to announce the agreement; Garafolo was first with the financial details.

American hockey fans will now surely lament the fact NHL players are not in the Olympics, more than they already have been, and the great amount of relative unknowns on the United States roster.

It's a far cry from the likes of Patrick Kane, Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, and Johnny Gaudreau, but the same goes for pretty much every team in the tournament.

Only once has a team other than the USA or Canada made the Olympic or Worlds title games. Team USA led 24-12 in shots after 40 minutes and easily could have been ahead by more. All four have significant global experience, but Terry is probably the most recognizable name as he was the hero who scored the shootout-winning goal in the gold medal game at last year's World Junior Championships. US leads Slovenia 1-0 17:44 in. Initial shot by Bobby Sanguinetti.

In Wednesday's game, the USA got goals from Brian O'Neill and Boston University's Jordan Greenway. It's 2-2 after the first period.
