Documents provided by Oxfam have led to further questions and suggest that the charity might not have "fully and frankly disclosed material details about the allegations at the time", the Charity Commission said.

The European commission, which also gives as much funding as the United Kingdom government to Oxfam said that "We are ready to review and if needed cease funding any partner who is not living up to the required high ethical standards".

Helen Evans, who was in charge of investigating allegations against Oxfam staff members between 2012 and 2015, told Channel 4 television that abuse cases she had heard of included a woman who had been coerced to have sex in exchange for aid.

The charity group's name took another hit on Tuesday when Oxfam International's chairman Juan Alberto Fuentes Knight was arrested in his native Guatemala over government graft allegations unrelated to the sexual assault claims.

National officer for Unite, which represents staff at the headquarters and in Oxfam shops, Siobhan Endean said: "Oxfam staff are dedicated to delivering aid to some of the poorest people in the world and the vast majority are entirely innocent of any wrongdoing".

In a statement, Oxfam said the actress had been a "devoted Oxfam supporter for many years".

"I am nothing short of horrified by the allegations against Oxfam International".

Why van Hauwermeiren was allowed to continue working with vulnerable people for major global charities has been a subject of questions asked of Oxfam, which faces the loss of funding it receives from the British government.

She also said her department had created a new safeguarding unit to urgently look into how we can stop sexual abusers and predators being reemployed by charities.
