Three San Antonio Chefs Named as Beard Award Semifinalists

The James Beard Foundation, named for the late cookbook author, announced chef Rui Liu is a semifinalist for its Best Chef: Southeast award Thursday. Also on the short list are Diego Galicia and Rico Torres, co-chefs and owners of Mixtli, and 2017's lineup of Best New Chefs per Food & Wine.

Central Florida chefs have been represented in the James Beard Foundation awards in the past.

This year's James Beard Foundation Award winners will be announced on May 7 in Chicago.

The finalists will be announced on March 14 at Parc in Philadelphia. A Michelin-starred chef, Lents has been a James Beard Award finalist in the past and came back to his native MI after working in Chicago. He was nominated previous year in the same category. And Berkeley's Great China is in the running for outstanding wine program, as is San Francisco's Benu.

A California native, Anderson served as executive chef at the Copper Beech Inn in the Ivoryton section of Essex for several years.

L'Etoile was a semifinalist in the "Outstanding Restaurant" category, designed for restaurants in the United States that serve as national standard bearers of consistent quality and excellence in food, atmosphere, and service. Based on the results and eligibility requirements for each award, the committee then produces a nominating ballot that lists the semifinalists in each of the 21 Restaurant and Chef Award categories. I alway said, 'My beard award would be somebody's repeat visit, to see the customer twice. And Oakland's Reem Assil (Reem's) and Preeti Mistry (Juhu Beach Club) were both nominated for best chef in the west, covering California, Hawaii, and Nevada. It was among San Antonio Magazine's Best New Restaurants in 2014.
