Working to strengthen bond between Gujarat and Canada: Justin Trudeau

The much-awaited meeting between the two is taking place after many flip-flops. Significantly, Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh had refused to meet Canadian Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan during the latter's visit to Punjab past year. Many Trudeau detractors from Canada have claimed that Modi not receiving him at the airport is also an issue.

The reason for the lukewarm welcome according to Dehejia could be that members of the Canadian government are associated with the Sikh independence movement, the Khalistan movement, which seeks to create a separate independent Sikh homeland in the Sikh-dominated northern state of Punjab. They said these efforts were led by the Canadian defence minister Sajjan, whose links with Sikh radicals have been closely monitored in India.

It is worth noting that Trudeau's India itinerary includes just half a day of official engagements in New Delhi - being described as "unusual" by veteran diplomats and the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. At the same time, there were reports that Capt Amarinder is not keeping well.

Trudeau's first visit to the country after becoming Canada's PM is aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties between India and Canada.

During the meeting, Capt Amarinder would take Punjab's close business as well as people-to-people relations with Canada to the next level. But on Monday, he appreciated Trueau's efforts in strengthening the connection between Punjab and Canada.

Yet, Justin Trudeau and his visit have come in for severe criticism in Canada with the "diplomatic tour" being dismissed as a long "family vacation" focused on photo-ops. Trudeau said Canada was open to immigration and asserted that the current bilateral trade of $8 billion in goods and $2 billion in services had potential to grow.
