Rajya Sabha math poised for a makeover

Rajya Sabha math poised for a makeover

Terms of 3 MPs from Odisha AV Swami, Dilip Tirkey & AU Singh Deo drawing towards conclusion; Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's tenure will also end in April. Recently, Akhilesh Yadav had called for opposition unity for the bypolls to two Lok Sabha seats to take on the BJP, but the Congress put up its candidates to decline the offer and BSP showed no inclination either. It is likely to win eight out of ten Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh, while the Samajwadi Party may get only one.

The Election Commission (EC) announced on 23rd Feb 2018 for the biennial polls to 58 Rajya Sabha seats from 16 states.

The BJP's increasing strength will give confidence to the party to easily pass key legislations like insurance bill, Triple Talaq bill, which is now delayed and blocked by the opposition parties in the lower house. "Electorally, the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done well in the last four years and this electoral strength would now be visible in Rajya Sabha", the BJP leader added.

Another state where the BJP is expected to do well is Maharashtra but the Rajya Sabha polls could also reflect the ongoing tussle between the BJP and its alliance partner Shiv Sena.

Veil of mystery surrounds Japanese father of 13 surrogate children in Thailand
The man's lawyer explains his motivation for wanting so many children as "personal and business reasons". Now he is only referred to in the Japanese-language media as an anonymous 28-year-old man.

RJD chief Lalu Yadav had offered to send Ms Mayawati to the upper house from Bihar in July a year ago after she resigned, accusing the BJP of not allowing her to raise the issue of anti-Dalit violence in Uttar Pradesh.

In Gujarat, the BJP may retain two of the four seats with lesser numbers in the present Assembly. It would be a key test of whether the opposition is able to field a common candidate in some seats against the BJP. His insistence on fielding a HAM candidate for Jehanabad Assembly seat was brushed aside by NDA and the seat was allotted to JD (U) earlier this month.

"The voting will be done at a notified polling station in the state Assembly premises on March 23 (9am to 4pm) and counting will be done on same day at 5 pm".

March 12 is the last date for filing of nominations, and March 15, the last date for their withdrawal. "It will be relatively easier for BJP to collaborate with other political parties and it may sober the opposition parties", said N. Bhaskara Rao, a New Delhi-based political analyst.
