Steven Smith named as Rajasthan Royals skipper

Steven Smith named as Rajasthan Royals skipper

While it was expected that Smith was in the problem solving to become the captain of Rajasthan Royals, the club made the announcement on Saturday.

"We have some great players and cricketing minds in the team with proven leaders like Steve Smith and Ajinkya Rahane", Royals' Head of Cricket Zubin Bharucha said in a release on the team's website.

Steve Smith is the current captain of Australia. Smith will join Australian spin legend Shane Warne, who was announced as the team's mentor earlier this year. "I am looking forward to exciting cricket and a successful campaign", Warne said at the event. "Looking forward to working with Warne", Smith said. Rajasthan Royals are making a come back this season after 2 years. Over the course of three days, they were seen honing their batting, bowling and fielding skills by playing practice matches and undergoing fitness drills. "I am excited about working with Smith".

Smith had led Rising Pune Supergiant in the last season of the IPL, taking over the mantle from MS Dhoni. They were as close to the championship title as it gets and lost the final to Mumbai Indians by just 1 run.

Antonio Conte regrets selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United
There has not been an away win in a league meeting between these clubs since Chelsea's 1-0 triumph at Old Trafford in May 2013. The Portuguese opted not to talk about that spat at his news conference on Friday, describing Conte as a "very good manager".

" Though, the team has experienced campaigners in Dinesh Karthik and Chris Lynn but Uthappa has been with the team for over 4 years now and he's had considerable experience in dealing with the dynamics of the side, not to mention that he's a fan favourite as well". He had amassed 472 runs in 15 matches previous year.

Royals co-owner Manoj Badale adds that Smith has had a long association with the franchise and can help in the development of the team and the franchise for a long time.

Rajasthan Royals will kick-off their IPL season with an away game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 9 followed by a home game against Delhi Daredevils on April 11 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
