Central Working Committee on Tuesday elected Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif as the party's acting president.

While speaking to the media, Kaira said Shehbaz was on good terms with the bureaucracy but had been disrespectful towards PPP.

PML (N) has once again demonstrated political maturity by amicably resolving the tickling issue of the leadership of the party following disqualification of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as party head by virtue of a Supreme Court verdict.

The Election Commission of Pakistan had given the party seven days to appoint its acting president for which the name of Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif was finalised on Sunday after a three-hour-long meeting he held with his elder brother Nawaz Sharif at Jati Umra.

In July, Pakistan's top court had ended Sharif's third stint in power for not declaring a small source of income, and the former leader could end up in jail if he is convicted in a separate corruption trial expected to wind up soon.

"PMLN elects Nawaz Sharif as its QUAID for life". Shahbaz, 66, chief minister of the vast province of Punjab, has built a reputation as a competent administrator who gets things done, especially infrastructure mega projects that are the cornerstone of the party's electoral appeal. His appointment ended speculations since Nawaz's disqualification that there was rift within the Sharif family and he was going to make his daughter Maryum or ailing wife Kulsoom PML-N's head.

Climate Change Minister and PML-N's information secretary Mushahidullah Khan told reporters on Monday that the election of an interim president of the PML-N was the top agenda item for the CWC meeting.

As per the procedure, the president is elected by the party's general council.

As a outcome, all nominees by PML (N) for the upcoming March 3 Senate elections were declared as independents. Afterwards, the party's general council is required to elect the president within 45 days.

Agencies add from Islamabad: Pakistan Awami Tehreek has moved a petition in the Election Commission of Pakistan to de-notify Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, arguing that a party can not be registered in the name of a disqualified person.
