Trump 'berated' Hicks after House Intel testimony

With White House communications director Hope Hicks announcing her resignation on Wednesday, she gave up her position as President Donald Trump's longest-tenured aide.

The departure of Hicks, who worked as a one-woman communications shop during his campaign, came as a surprise to most in the White House - and cast a pall over the West Wing at a trying time for the president.

"Hicks announcing her departure just one day after admitting she told lies, what she characterized as 'white lies, ' but lies nonetheless, in the service of President Trump".

On Tuesday, Ms. Hicks underwent nearly nine hours of closed-door testimony on Capitol Hill, answering queries about the presidential campaign and certain aspects of the transition period after Mr. Trump's November 2016 victory.

Rep. Adam Schiff of California, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, criticized Hicks for refusing to answer questions about the White House, noting specifically she would not address her role in drafting Trump Jr.'s misleading initial statement that the Trump Tower meeting was about adoptions.

Trump said on Wednesday (28 February): "Hope is outstanding and has done great work for the last three years". They said that she had told a small group of people in the days before the session that she had planned to leave her job.

The White House explained that Hicks wants to pursue other opportunities and that she conveyed her decision directly to the president. "I am sure we will work together again in the future", President Trump said in a statement.

Presidential adviser and first daughter Ivanka Trump in a tweet that Hicks "is loved & admired" and wished "her well" in her next endeavor. Porter, who was romantically involved with Hicks, stands accused of domestic abuse by both of his ex-wives.

The 29-year-old former model only took over as head of White House communications last September following the very brief tenure of Anthony Scaramucci.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said it remained unclear when Ms Hicks would leave the administration.

Before joining the Trump campaign in 2015, Hicks had no political experience, so it's anyone's guess where she'll go next and how she'll draw on her White House background.

Reflecting on her time in the Trump White House-which, for many, has been colored by unrelenting tumult, resulting in large part from Mueller's investigation-Hicks simply told the Times she had "no words" to express her thanks to Trump. (Hicks' lawyer denied the allegations in a statement to the Times).

The resulting intensified focus was something Ms Hicks "likely did not enjoy", Business Insider reported.

She reportedly added that these lies were never about serious, or legal, issues.

During the campaign, Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, forwarded Hicks an email from Trump Jr. about the contact with WikiLeaks.

She was an unconventional press secretary, rarely mixing it up with reporters, nearly never giving interviews and, despite Trump's fondness for cable, staying off TV.
