Arsene Wenger's verdict on Arsenal's campaign: 'worse than last year'

Arsene Wenger's verdict on Arsenal's campaign: 'worse than last year'

Petr Cech was at fault for both of the Brighton goals and he tweeted an apology.

Europa League success can still be secured, which would over the Gunners a route back into the Champions League, but AC Milan await at the last-16 stage and there are still several other heavyweight outfits setting their sights on continental glory.

They attacked Arsenal in waves whenever afforded space, with Knockaert and Ezquierdo causing havoc on the flanks while Gross schemed in the pockets between defence and midfield.

A well-placed long ball crossed in from the right side picked out Glenn Murray, with Shkodran Mustafi misjudging his position, and the towering striker headed it past Cech to go two up against the bamboozled visitors.

Arsene Wenger has made a decision to give Hector Bellerin a rest as Calum Chambers comes in at right-back while Sead Kolasinac keeps his place at left-back in place of the injured Nacho Monreal.

Instead, Arsenal betrayed the defensive frailties that have been a feature of their campaign and allowed Brighton to take control.

Iwobi was replaced in the 73rd minute by Danny Welbeck.

It was almost 2-0 minutes later as Gross sent Cech sprawling to save at his near post, and Dunk headed over after 18 minutes from another corner by Gross.

The second goal wasn't unstoppable, but less on Cech. Granit Xhaka fed the ball into Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who cleverly flicked the ball home with the outside of his boot.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the Gunners fear finding themselves in a similar situation to when Alexis Sánchez left for Man Utd in the January transfer window, with Arsenal having to settle for a swap deal to bring in Henrikh Mkhitaryan rather than cash-in on the Premier League star.

"We want Wenger out" was soon being chanted by the visiting fans, who had never seen their team 2-0 down to Brighton in a league game.

Many believe this is the worst side to have ever played under Wenger, despite boasting the talented likes of Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere and Aubameyang.

Cech is an outstanding professional - something he showed in the second half here when, with other players seeking confrontation after an bad Sead Kolasinac challenge flattened Ezequiel Schelotto, he ran 40 yards to check on the injured Brighton player - and an intelligent, respected voice in the dressing room but his on-pitch role is surely on borrowed time.
