United States warship makes historic Vietnam visit

In recent years, Vietnam has consistently been at the forefront of multilateral diplomatic efforts, particularly in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), to criticize China's massive reclamation activities across disputed land features in the South China Sea.

Top leaders from the United States and Vietnam discussed the possibility of an aircraft carrier visit a year ago as part of an effort to further defense relations.

Although no US aircraft carrier has been to Vietnam since the end of the war, other, smaller USA warships have made high-level visits as ties improved in recent years. Some city residents said they welcomed the Navy visit. In 2016, former President Obama lifted a decades-old ban on military equipment sales to Vietnam and last year, the two countries signed a three-year plan for defense cooperation.

Huynh Quang Nguyen, a taxi driver, echoed the sentiment.

The visit is meant to demonstrate the countries' growing military ties.

The Carl Vison, which is assigned to the Navy's 3rd Fleet, has been patrolling the Western Pacific after leaving its homeport of San Diego in January.

The Vietnamese officials were introduced to the ship's operation, and given a chance to learn about crew members' life and work on the ship.
