Russian military: Militants launched 272 projectiles at Damascus over past 10 days

Pro-government forces have made swift gains since launching their offensive, seizing roughly 40 per cent of eastern Ghouta territory in two weeks, according to the Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group, and setting off a wave of displacement as civilians flee strikes and advancing forces.

Regime warplanes pounded Eastern Ghouta including the main town of Douma early Tuesday, as well as the towns of Sabqa and Hammuriyeh overnight, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Sunday that the chemical attacks allegations against the Syrian government are part of the Western "dictionary of lies", state news agency SANA reported.

Russia's military announced Monday it was offering safe passage for rebels and their families out of eastern Ghouta, where some 400,000 people have been trapped under a relentless government campaign of shelling and airstrikes. He said they can carry their weapons. Ali al-Za'tari, asked the government to commit to a ceasefire on Thursday to allow more aid in.

The misery in a besieged rebel suburb of Damascus caused by the Syrian government's relentless push to crush the area is indicative of a "new phase of horror" in Syria's war, a top United Nations official has said. The offer presented to the opposition fighters did not include specifics on where they would go after leaving their positions, but it resembles several attempts in the past few months where fighters were able to relocate to other rebel-held areas and guarantees long-term immunity to fighters who accept it.

Wael Olwan, of the Failaq al-Rahman (the Rahman Legion), a major armed group linked to the Free Syrian Army in Eastern Ghouta, said on Wednesday that Moscow insists on using military escalation as a means to cause "mass displacement".

According to the White Helmets civil defense agency, today's deadliest bombardment - which left 20 people dead, a lot of them children and women - took place in Hammuriyah, Eastern Ghouta. Raids on Tuesday reportedly killed 24 people.

France says the U.N. Security Council will meet Wednesday to discuss the failure to implement its February 24 resolution demanding a cease-fire "without delay" in Syria.

Iyad Abdelaziz, a member of the Douma Local Council, says nine aid trucks had to leave the area after government shelling and airstrikes intensified in the evening.

Turkey sent troops into the Afrin enclave on January 20 to drive out Syrian Kurdish fighters it considers to be terrorists.
