Cong to field Kumar Ketkar for Rajya Sabha elections

Kerala NDA vice chairman and media baron, Rajeev Chandrasekhar's name has been cleared by the BJP central committee for the lone Rajya Sabha seat it can win from Karnataka.

Union Health and Family Welfare minister JP Nadda are all set to get elected to RajyaSabha unopposed from the lone vacant seat in Himachal Pradesh as the main opposition party, Congress on Sunday chose to not to field any candidate against him. In return, Congress will support the BSP candidate from Uttar Pradesh.

Two national general secretaries - Maharashtra in-charge Saroj Pandey and Haryana in-charge Anil Jain, are also on the list of candidates. The polling for 58 upper house seats is scheduled on March 23, 2018.

From Haryana, the party has made a decision to put up Lt. Gen. (retd) D.P. Vats, a former director and commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune, who was earlier seen as close to Bhupinder Singh Hooda's Congress government in the state. After consulting the party leaders, Chief Minister and TRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao on Sunday finalised the names of the candidates who will file their nominations on Monday.

Madan Lal Saini will be the second BJP candidate from Rajasthan.

The BJP, which has a 45-member strength in the State Assembly, can easily win one Rajya Sabha seat and the party plans to spring a surprise by fielding a party worker.

Last Wednesday, the party has announced candidature nine senior ministers and leaders, including Arun Jaitley, J P Nadda and Prakash Javadekar among others.

Ashok Bajpai, Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, Sakal Deep Rajbhar, Kanta Kardam, Anil Jain, GVL Narsimha Rao and Harnath Singh Yadav will contest from Uttar Pradesh.

Ajay Pratap Singh and Kailash Soni are candidates from Madhya Pradesh.

Rajmani Patel, Kumar Ketkar, Porika Bairam Naik and Abhishek Manu Singhvi are contesting from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana and West Bengal respectively. This despite the lobbying in New Delhi for former Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, who also belongs to the same sub-sect, for this seat.
