A man tried to stab a soldier outside the residence of the Iranian ambassador to Austria in Vienna and was subsequently shot dead, police told local media on Monday.

The spokesman said the guard initially used pepper spray before opening fire on the assailant.

The Austrian police added that a security guard was injured in the attack and transported to hospital for treatment.

At least four shots had been fired.

The soldier sustained cuts to his right arm but was protected from more serious injuries by his stab-proof jacket.

They will go into this game on the back of a dispiriting defeat, having capitulated 2-3 to Mourinho's Manchester United on Monday. Eden Hazard has scored 68 Premier League goals for Chelsea , one short of equalling Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's tally.

"The background and motive of the attack are still completely unclear and the subject of intensive investigation", according to police spokesperson Harald Sörös.

The attacker, a 26-year-old Austrian, died at the scene.

According to early indications, the soldier acted within the rules, a spokesman from the ministry of defence was quoted as saying.

Police ordered reinforcements around all diplomatic missions in the Austrian capital, which is also home to many global organisations. A 23-year-old Afghan drug addict admitted that he randomly attacked three people from a family near a restaurant as well as a fellow Afghan he knew.
