Pop culture: Singers from Oklahoma City, Apache survive 'American Idol' auditions

"I just couldn't really be the best singer that I could be", he said.

'American Idol' is back and two talented singers from the Lawton, Oklahoma area killed it on the second night of the premiere last night (3/12). But I'm always up for a curveball when something unexpected happens.

When David Francisco popped into the American Idol audition room, the judges didn't know what to expect after he admitted that he'd been hit by a vehicle and lost all function of his legs after he moved to Nashville to pursue his music dreams. He did so, but allegedly unsatisfied that he didn't make a classic kiss sound, the singer asked him to kiss her again on the cheek, which he did with some hesitation. After he sang Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely", Lionel hugged him, Katy cried and all three judges told him he was going to Hollywood.

It comes as Katy took her Witness world tour to South America this week. I wouldn't even call it a talent. It'll be interesting to see how she does in this competition and if she can make it as far as she did on AGT. She even gets them out of their seats and dancing themselves, so it's no surprise when they give her three "yes" votes! Sohmer said his ultimate goal is to change lives by inspiring people to "look at music and study music and appreciate music as much as I do". "My parents, they were David Cook fans, and they were celebrating and then I was just so upset so I just ran out of the room", Sohmer said.

When Williams was at South Dakota, she recruited Ibis, whose recruiting profile quickly soared above a mid-major program. Notre Dame takes on Hampton, Baylor plays Wagner, and Saint Mary's faces Southeastern Louisiana in the first round .

When it came to Brandon Diaz, his route to the high ground was his voice, and he used his falsetto to wonderful advantage on Allen Stone's "Unaware" which is becoming the selection of choice for 2018 "American Idol" auditions. Or, if you're Katy Perry, a boyfriend.

Having said that, I'm choosing Laine Hardy as the best audition of the night.

This audition was more successful than Poppe's appearance on NBC's "The Voice". There's a lot of grit and depth to it. That's why I found myself loving this audition.

Trevor also explained how it all went down between him and Katy. But she also brings the realest critiques, and often leading the show's conversation rather than her male counterparts (which was par for course when Simon Cowell judged the og version).
