Nixon was introduced by Zakiyah Ansari, the Advocacy Director with the New York State Alliance for Quality Education (AQE). "But if Washington is a swamp, Albany is a cesspool".

Retired porter Norman Frazier, 66, also said he would vote for Nixon in the September primary over Cuomo.

The governor's former closest aide, Joe Percoco was convicted on federal corruption charges earlier this month, and several more former Cuomo associates face trial later this year. After a train derailment injured dozens of people in June, Governor Andrew Cuomo declared the system to be in a state of emergency, pledging $1 billion for improvements, though no one is quite sure when improvements will actually start. "It's a flight of fancy on her part", Quinn told The Post.

"I love NY, and today I'm announcing my candidacy for governor".

While falling short of apologizing, she said it was not her intention to suggest "Nixon's identity has any bearing on her candidacy".

Nixon said as governor she will address the rampant inequality that plagues NY state, noting that the top one percent of New Yorkers make 45 times as much what the other 99 percent of New Yorkers make combined.

The Trump presidency has mobilised Democrats and led to an unprecedented surge in women running for office at state and federal elections this November - polls widely considered as a referendum on the Trump White House.

I couldn't help but think, the MTA came for the wrong gubernatorial candidate today. "It shows what I've been saying all along".
