High school gunman dead after shooting two students

When a 17-year-old gunman walked into Maryland's Great Mills High School on Tuesday, the swift action of the school's sole resource officer, Blaine Gaskill, was instrumental in bringing the incident to a quick end.

The school day had barely begun when the student, who has not been identified, shot a male student and a female student at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County before the campus security officer intervened, county Sheriff Timothy Cameron told NBC's Washington affiliate.

During the shooting, an armed school resources officer reacted and exchanged shots with the shooter, Sheriff Cameron added. He was taken to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital and is in good condition, hospital officials said.

It's not yet clear whether the shooter, Austin Wyatt Rollins, was felled by the officer's bullet or killed himself.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday morning at the Great Mills High School in Lexington Park, Maryland.

Many students across the country are calling for effective gun controls, leading up to Saturday's March For Our Lives rally in the nation's capital against gun violence in schools.

There have been other cases in which such officers have interceded during shootings.

"He had to cover significant ground", Cameron said.

"At least someone is doing their job", Stoneman Douglas student Tanzil Philip said.

Great Mills High School will be closed Wednesday. Authorities say the gunman was killed, and another 14-year-old male student was also wounded. "But we don't have action", said the No. 2 U.S. House Democrat, Steny Hoyer, who represents the area in Congress. She tweeted: "The police came to my classroom and saw us to the bathroom and back and said we would be leaving soon".

The county sheriff said deputies are on the scene and that parents or guardians should stay away, going instead to Leonardtown High School to reunite with Great Mills students there.

"Gaskill fired at the shooter nearly simultaneously as the shooter fired", Cameron said. But based on the evidence we do have, there's enough to suggest that putting more guns in schools could actually make gun violence worse.

The school's principal, Jake Heibel, said that in February there was a report of two students in a hallway talking about "shooting" and "school", and that information about a "potential threat at school" was also "circulated" on social media.

One Twitter user Mollie Davis, claiming to be a student at the school, posted a message online saying: "There was a loud sound and everyone started screaming and running". In the 2018 Maryland Swimming Junior Championships, which took place earlier this month, she swam best times in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle events. Police said they obtained a search warrant that led to them finding semi-automatic rifles, handguns and other weapons, along with ammunition.

The officer was not harmed, Cameron sheriff said.
