State AGs press Facebook over Cambridge Analytica scandal

Cambridge Analytica has been accused of illegally using data of tens of millions of Facebook users for political work on behalf of its clients.

Wiley said it was "categorically untrue that Cambridge Analytica has never used Facebook data" that was taken in the 2016 election, as the Facebook data was foundational for creating Ripon.

Cambridge Analytica vigorously denies the charges levelled against it, and has called Wylie "a part-time employee who left his position in July 2014" who had no direct knowledge of how the firm had operated since.

"They are an example of what modern-day colonialism looks like", Wylie testified.

Wylie said that Strategic Communications Ltd, the parent company of Cambridge Analytica, engaged in "influence brokering".

The documents shared by him also indicated that the company had conducted caste research for a major party in Indian states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Following his explosive data leak about how Indian political parties employed SCL to obtain voter information for use in poll strategies, Wylie got requests from Indian journalists to reveal SCL's projects in India.

Cambridge Analytica, which had the data for 50 million Facebook users, was led in part by Steve Bannon and worked for the Trump campaign's digital operation.

He also said that CA/SCL has offices across India. But I know that they have done all kinds of projects.

SCL's activities in India, as per the list, dates back to 2003 when it carried out two projects - a psephological study and opinion polling for a national party to identify swing voters and in another a party's audit and a study of its key voters in a particular state. "India is so big that one state can be as big as Britain".

The government has issued a notice to social media giant Facebook over alleged data breach involving British company Cambridge Analytica.

After the Channel 4 report came out Wednesday, Andy George, who ran the Senate Majority Fund when it used Cambridge Analytica, told KMGH that neither he, nor anyone on his team, had access to the Cambridge Analytica data.

The Indian government had earlier taken note of the controversy. "The whistleblower has publicly confirmed that the Congress was indeed their client", Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said. Wylie further stated that he broke his silence on Cambridge Analytica as he believed that the company was influencing elections in struggling democracies and felt uneasy about this.
