Facebook's data policy - which was updated on Wednesday - states that it collects "the content, communications and other information you provide when you ... message or communicate with others".

San Francisco: Battered by media reports that it "secretly" deleted CEO Mark Zuckerberg's posts from his recipients" inboxes, Facebook is now planning to make its "Unsend' feature available to its over two billion users in coming months. "We should have done this sooner - and we're sorry that we did not", the spokesperson added. "We did so in full compliance with our legal obligations to preserve messages".

Messenger, which allows users to chat amongst themselves, became a point of interest this week after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company had "detected" that "sensational messages" were being sent via Messenger in Myanmar. "And it's not enough to have rules requiring they protect the information, it's not enough to believe them when they tell us they are protecting information", Mr Zuckerberg said on Thursday.

Perhaps the announcing the unsend feature is a way to soften the severity of deleting messages from users conversations without consent or notice by making it look like they were testing the feature.

The reason behind using this feature was to delete embarrassing messages from going viral around. If a user long presses a private message on Facebook a "Delete Message" pop up confirms that the function will "delete your copy of the message", and the recipients' copy will remain.

The firm's failure to disclose its ability to delete messages that have been sent has provoked anger, as has the absence of a similar tool for regular users, reported The Guardian. "This may take some time", a Facebook spokesman wrote in an e-mail last Friday.

Facebook has been facing trust issues from the public after it was revealed that Cambridge Analytica reportedly accessed information from Facebook users without their knowledge. Facebook created a capability that let executives expunge their app messages after a period.

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's Chief Operating Officer has said in an interview that the company mishandled the whole Cambridge Analytica affair.

The audit of Cambridge Analytica is on hold, in deference to a United Kingdom investigation.

Facebook made the announcement as Zuckerberg prepares to appear before Congress next week to answer questions about the harvesting of personal data on 87 million users by a British political consultancy working for Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
