Pennsylvania man driving bus that slammed overpass in NY

Dozens of people, including many Long Island high school students, are seriously hurt after their bus slammed into an overpass on the Southern State Parkway.

On Sunday evening, April 8, a bus with high school students crashed into a viaduct on long island, crushing the upper part. Six teenagers suffered serious injuries and the entire top of the bus was destroyed.

Police confirmed the individual operating the bus has a valid driver's license.

Candelaria said the driver, who was not identified and was being evaluated, "obviously wasn't aware of the parkway system" and its restrictions on commercial vehicles.

"I don't think he had any awareness because if you look at the damage, it's a high-impact strike", Candelaria said, adding that the incident remains under investigation.

The bus was carrying 38 children, 5 chaperones and the driver. The Nassau County police and the Lakeview Volunteer Fire Department set up a mass-casualty treatment triage and saved lives. Buses and trucks are not allowed on the parkway because of the low height of the overpasses. No one answered the phone Monday morning at bus company in South Amboy, New Jersey.

Some residents tell News 12 this isn't the first time a tall vehicle has hit an overpass on the highway. He will undergo a drug and alcohol test.

Passengers reported hearing someone yell "Duck!" as the bus approached the overpass, Candelaria said, but it was unclear if it was the driver.

"New York State parkways traditionally have bridges that are lower than the standard legal bridge clearance", said a statement from the governor's office.

Emergency responders used ladders, placed against the side of the bus, to get the passengers off of the vehicle.
