Among them were "Black Peter", "Loves of a Blonde" and "The Fireman's Ball". He became a naturalized American citizen nine years later. The first film he made in the United States, 1970's Taking Off, was a flop. At his lowest point he was offered the chance to direct One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, another anti-authoritarian parable adapted from Ken Kesey's novel. "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", is by far his most popular and highly appreciated film till date. The movie won eight of its 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Forman and Best Actor for F. Murray Abraham. In the 1960s, he joined the New Wave of filmmakers standing up to the Communist regime in what was then Czechoslovakia. Forman married three times. Amadeus deals with the life and struggles of the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his contemporary rival Antonio Salieri. Forman became the 34th recipient of the DGA's Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Motion Picture Direction in 2013.

His father, who had been a member of the resistance, died in the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald.

They were named after comedian Andy Kaufman and Jim Carrey, who played the part of Kaufman in "Man on the Moon". But it also failed to fully convey Kaufman's pioneering style of offbeat comedy or the reasons for his disdaining success at every turn.
