The warrant for the raids also specified that Cohen was being investigated for bank fraud, wire fraud and campaign finance issues, CNN reported earlier this week.

In response to Cohen's motion to prevent prosecutors from using evidence collected in Monday's raids of his home and office, the United States attorney in NY asserted the raids were authorized by a federal judge to seek evidence of conduct "for which Cohen is under criminal investigation".

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents who conducted the raids were seeking information on payments to Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who also claims to have had a sexual relationship with Trump, a person familiar with the matter has said. Both Clifford and McDougal have sued in an effort to free themselves from the contracts.

After giving Trump until Monday to weigh in, Wood then decided that she would resume a part of the hearing at 2 p.m. on Friday, apparently to consider interests of other clients - "innocent parties" she said - whose files may have been vacuumed up in the Cohen raid. On Friday, the Department of Justice announced Cohen had been under criminal investigation for several months in NY over his business dealings.

Jake Tapper addressed the Cohen chill-session on CNN Friday afternoon, noting he was "sitting outside his hotel, hanging out, not a care in the world, even though he is under criminal investigation".

Prosecutors also seized recordings of conversations that Cohen had secretly made, but he told people in recent days that he did not tape his conversations with Trump.

Friday's hearing was marked by multiple private conversations between the lawyers and the judge.

We did not make it but we have to keep going, there is nothing else we can do. "The Champions League punishes you for that". Further, he said: "Of course we should believe in the final". "I'm on cloud nine", Pallotta said at the Stadio Olimpico.

Trump lawyer Joanna Herndon, who said she was hired on Wednesday, asked for the adjournment to give the president's legal team time to make arguments. Information deemed to be germane to the criminal investigation would not be protected by attorney-client privilege.

Lawyers for Cohen attempted to block federal prosecutors from using some of the recordings they seized by filing a temporary restraining order.

"The government is investigating whether there was, in connection with Trump's White House bid, a conspiracy to commit fraud and extortion for the objective of silencing potentially compromising sources - specifically, people in a position to portray Donald Trump as a womanizer", McCarthy, a senior fellow at the National Review Institute, said.

Cohen recently admitted to paying the adult film actress Stephanie Clifford, known as Stormy Daniels, a sum of $130,000 just before the 2016 election. Judge Wood approved his request to be heard in the closed meeting.

"We want to ensure the documents do not disappear or that there's a control set that's maintained regardless of who reviews the documents", he added. Defense attorneys typically advise clients under investigation to avoid speaking with one another. Cohen would joke, according to Crockett's AP interview.

The raid, and the warrants used to conduct it, was to find information on payments made to two women who claim to have had sexual relationships with Trump.
