Freezing rain a possibility says weather service

There is the potential for a significant ice storm in some areas with freezing rain amounts in excess of 20mm.

The ice storm warning is in effect from 2 p.m. today until 2 p.m. Sunday for Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Erie, Genesee, Wyoming, and Livingston counties.

Environment Canada says the ice storm pelting parts of southern Ontario could be "historic", potentially downing trees and power lines and leading to widespread power outages.

The heavier rainfall moves out, but periods of rain, freezing rain and sleet through the night.

Be prepared for power outages due to strong winds and ice.

Environment Canada called it "quite likely" that between 10 and 20 mm of ice would accumulate by Sunday morning, with even more possible in localized areas.

A freezing rain warning is in place for Peterborough and southern Peterborough County, Lindsay and southern Kawartha Lakes, and Northumberland County, with an ice storm forecast for Sunday.

"We've got cars in the ditches, we've got cars on the concrete wall, we've got cars facing the wrong way", he said. Travellers are being warned to check their flights online before heading out. Enough rain may fall later Sunday into Sunday night for some flooding to be an issue to deal with then. By early Saturday afternoon, over 7,000 people were without power.

The ice storm warning means total ice accumulations of a half inch of ice are expected, making traffic hard and causing downed tree limbs and power lines.
