Commonwealth Games closing ceremony slammed on social media

Commonwealth Games closing ceremony slammed on social media

Nigeria's Quadri Aruna plays a shot during the men's singles semi-final table tennis match against India's Sharath Achanta at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games at the Oxenford Studios venue in Gold Coast on April 14, 2018.

Hosts Johanna Griggs and Basil Zempilas told viewers the absence of athletes from Channel Seven's coverage was beyond its control.

"Look, we understand many people have been disappointed by tonight's closing ceremony".

"I'm furious. Actually, wrecking a tradition that is so important, " Griggs said.

"People are thinking Channel Seven has chosen not to show pictures of athletes or not to show the flag bearer, Kurt Fernley or other nation's flag bearers coming in".

"We wanted athletes to be part of and enjoy the Closing Ceremony". "We stuffed it up and I apologise to the viewers and the athletes".

I had only a short 20min window to get a selection of images and this was the one that worked best with four players all contesting the ball after a rebound off the edge of the net.

'Nice of Commonwealth Games to launch the Australian Idol reunion tour, ' someone tweeted.

This morning, Commonwealth Games committee chairman Peter Beattie publicly apologised for the "complete stuff-up".

"This decision to bring the athletes into the stadium before the broadcast was operationally driven given there were restrictions on being able to keep the athletes waiting in comfort".

GOLDOC appreciates that this decision therefore did not provide the opportunity for the television audiences to share this moment. "Their life stories illustrate the power of dedication and a never-say-die attitude that made them overcome countless hurdles to attain the heights of success they did at the CWG", stated PM Modi in an official release.

"To be brutally honest, most of the athletes left during the ceremony".

"While the curtains come down on this Games, the future of sports in the Commonwealth is very bright indeed, in fact, in 2018 the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Sports are more relevant than ever before".

I've got to point out they were shot by the one Seven news camera that we're allowed to put down on the field to capture news footage for tomorrow. "Way too long. Dare I say a little self indulgent".

"While we can't promise you the sun, sand and sea of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, we can offer you youth, energy, creativity and a love of sport", she said. The 2022 Games will be held in Birmingham after the city came in on short notice to replace Durban, South Africa, which had lost the hosting rights in 2017 after failing to deliver on key promises in its bid.
