Hundreds gather to remember Barbara Bush in private funeral service

Theirs was the longest marriage of any presidential couple.

Susan Garrett Baker, longtime friend of the late Barbara Bush and the wife of former Secretary of State James Baker, called her the "gold standard of what it means to be a friend".

Meacham spoke to hundreds of people attending the funeral Saturday for the former first lady in Houston.

In another emotional moment, six of Bush's grandchildren - all women - each read a section from a passage from the Book of Proverbs that began with the lines, "Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her: 'Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all'".

The Bush family was seated in front of the church.

1st girl Melania Trump, along with former first girls Laura Bush Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton, will probably undoubtedly be among the about 1,500 predicted visitors.

As first lady, Bush worked to increase literacy rates. Meacham said that during her final days in the hospital, Bush jokingly asked a nurse if she wanted to know "why George W. turned out the way he had".

Former Florida governor and presidential candidate Jeb Bush joked about his mother's famously no-nonsense demeanor. "I looked at her and I said, "This is my first time being here" - I was kind of nervous - and Barbara Bush just spread her arms wide and smiled at me, and said, 'Well, take a look around!' She was so welcoming". Bush died Tuesday at the age of 92.

Other guests included former Rep. Numerous women wore the former first lady's favorite colour, blue, and trademark pearls.

Mr Trump had said he was staying away to "avoid disruptions due to added security" but added that he would be watching the funeral.

Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne Cheney, will attend as well, according to a source close to the family.

After seeing how many people turned out, George H.W. Bush spontaneously made an appearance inside the church, greeting mourners who stood in line to pay their respects. From his wheelchair, he spent about 15 minutes shaking hands with people who had come.
