Mets sending Matt Harvey to the bullpen, Callaway announces

But, much like it was the case for so many pitchers in the past, this has become the story of the boy who cried wolf.

In what can't be considered too much of a surprise, the NL East leading New York Mets have made a decision to remove former All-Star Matt Harvey from their rotation after a brutal start to the season.

I think of Mike Pelfrey and John Maine, even Pedro Martinez and Johan Santana, all of whom went through a similar cycle, during which each pitcher - despite previous success - always ended up spiraling down in to a post-game conversation centered around their personal situation. Of course, this is a far cry from the pitcher we would see during the 2012 and 2013 campaigns. "And Dave and I are going to take the approach that we're gonna do everything we can to help him do that". Most notably, Callaway oversaw the transition of talented Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco from a starter role to the bullpen and back to the rotation.

"It's inevitable that he's going to create begins for all of us&rdquo". In his 15.2 innings and 1-1 mark this season, Newcomb has put up a 4.02 ERA with 22 Ks and eight walks. There's a pretty substantial body of evidence that Harvey is now a bad pitcher.

With Jason Vargas soon to return from his broken hand, the Mets needed to remove someone from the rotation. And Harvey might very well be the odd man out.

Loughlin quickly stepped in to stop the bout, and Khan picked up his first victory since May 2015. Brook responded: "He doesn't want the fight". "I'm a 147lb fighter".

Regardless of any of that, it certainly isn't a pleasing development for the 29-year-old Harvey (he certainly didn't seem happy in this video). "I think we can help him utilize his aggressiveness, his ability to use his pitches the right way to get outs, and hopefully that will carry over to when he starts again".

Callaway said the conversation on Saturday with Harvey was "tough" and "not comfortable" given the pitcher's former stature on the team. "I showed I can get people out still in the fifth, sixth inning when my pitch count gets up". He was named the starter by manager Bruce Bochy and became the first pitcher since Roger Clemens in 2004 to start the All-Star Game in their home ballpark. All six runs came in the first 2 1/3 innings, so he did bear down to last six innings, his longest outing since May 2017, covering a stretch of 12 consecutive starts. He'll be a free agent after this season, and instead of landing the $200 million contract he once looked destined for, he'll wind up with a cheap, short-term deal. Syndergaard is 0-1 with a 3.92 ERA in four career starts against Atlanta.

Harvey at least took pressure off the Mets' bullpen by making it through six innings.

"My performance hasn't been there, and I just have to do whatever I have to do to get back into the starting rotation", Harvey told reporters Saturday.
