Lewiston police schedule drug take-back events

(DEA can not accept liquids, needles or sharps.) "Take Back Day helps to keep drugs out of the hands of abusers and potentially save lives by removing unused painkillers and controlled drugs from homes", said DEA Acting Administrator Robert W. Patterson.

The Sheridan Police Department and Sheridan County Public Health will again participate in National Drug Take Back Day.

Drop off is free and anonymous. The majority of misused and abused prescription durgs are obtained from friends and family, including drugs that are stolen from home medicine cabinets, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Those collecting the unwanted medications are unable to accept sharps (needles) at this event. This weekend more than 5,600 collection sites manned by nearly 4,500 partner law enforcement agencies will be open 10 2 p.m. local time.

In the past, it was commonplace to just simply toss old or unwanted medications in the trash or flush them down the toilet.

"Getting prescription drugs out of people's homes keeps kids and other people from getting their hands on them", Sheriff Gene Fischer said.

Officials also point out that opioid abuse is at epidemic levels in the USA and a top public health concern.
