Syria shot down 46 United States missiles: Russian Federation

Rudskoi did not specify the type of weapons, but his remarks follow reports in the Russian media that Moscow is considering selling its S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Syria.

Transferring upgraded air-defense systems to Syria could be seen as an escalation by neighboring Israel, raising the risk of Israeli attacks. However, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said that S-300 missile systems had been delivered to Syria last month.

He went on to revise Russia's initial claim that 71 of 105 missiles fired were blocked in the strike - carried out jointly by the US, UK, and France - saying instead that 83 missiles went down, and only 22 hit their targets.

Russia's Defense Ministry announced Wednesday that the planned delivery of an S-300 air defense system to Syria will be completed in the "near future", They did not provide an exact date, though Russian Federation is interested in shoring up Syria's air defense capability.

Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned Tuesday that if Syria uses Russian-made air defense missiles against Israel, the IDF will strike back.

"Russian specialists will continue training Syrian military personnel, as well as assist in the development of new air defense systems, the deliveries of which will be carried out in the near future", Rudskoy told the news agency. "We are looking forward to the day when we can use this material, because the reconstruction of Syria must include acknowledging, investigating and prosecuting crimes".

Israel has not taken sides in the Syrian civil war, but its air force has carried out dozens of air strikes during the fighting, majority believed to have been aimed at suspected arms shipments to Hizballah militias allied with Iran.

In February, Israel shot down what it said was an armed Iranian drone that penetrated its airspace from Syria. Israel then retaliated by destroying Syrian anti-aircraft batteries.

The missiles were supposed to target a research center in Damascus, the headquarters of the Syrian Republican Guard, an air defense base, several military aerodromes and a number of army depots. According to the expert, the statement from Russia's Defence Ministry about the supplies of S-300 systems to Syria forces aggressive states, like Israel, to bethink themselves and negotiate.

Eight years into the conflict, more than 13 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance; about a quarter of the population is displaced in neighboring Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey, according to the United Nations. Especially now that it has become clear the Trump administration didn't have sound evidence of an attack, the hasty decision to resort to force was a foolish one. "If anyone's shooting at our planes, we'll destroy them", he said.
