Trump was referring to December's special election where Republican Roy Moore won the GOP primary and was then defeated by Democrat Doug Jones.

The 68-year-old Blankenship served a one-year prison term on a misdemeanor conviction for conspiring to violate federal mine safety standards at Massey's Upper Big Branch Mine.

West Virginia Legal professional Basic Patrick Morrisey, left, laid out a plan to have the previous coal baron Don Blankenship disqualified from Tuesday's Republican Senate main.

McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, is Chinese American and now serves as secretary of transportation.

Don Blankenship, the coal executive and ex-con who was convicted of criminal negligence that resulted in the death of 29 miners and is now running for the Senate from West Virginia, has an ad out attacking Mitch McConnell because his wife is Taiwanese, just going full out both racist and ignorant in claiming she's Chinese and making an issue out of that. "If I am not the Republican nominee against Joe Manchin in the fall, Manchin will win", he said.

Earlier Tuesday, Blankenship's campaign released a statement attacking McConnell.

According to the Blankenship campaign, the candidate has already spoken to his probation officer, who wasn't concerned about the financial disclosure.

In a Republican primary debate Wednesday night, Blankenship defended the comments, saying, "This idea that calling someone a "Chinaperson" - I mean, I'm an American-person - I don't see this insinuation by the press that there is something racist about saying a 'Chinaperson.' Some people are Korean-persons, some people are African-persons".

Blankenship is at odds with McConnell, who he says is "spending millions to defeat me".

The West Virginia primary is on May 8.

"We've actually been able to work with him on his regulatory agenda", said Atty Gen. Patrick Morrisey, (R) Candidate for U.S. Senate. "I've never used a race word". "They are calling me a bigot, a moron, a despicable character, and mentally ill". The "cocaine" nickname is reportedly in reference to a 2014 report that drugs were found aboard a shipping vessel owned by Chao's family. Chao worked in the administrations of presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Jenkins and Morrisey aso distanced themselves from McConnell during a recent debate, when no one raised their hands to say they'd support McConnell as majority leader.

The younger Trump responded with another tweet.
