Man accused of murder-for-hire plot in Greenwood Co

The man was arrested the same day he made the down payment and was later charged with murder for hire and solicitation to commit a crime of violence.

A Lexington County deputy working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation submitted an affidavit in a U.S. District Court that alleges Lecroy contacted a confidential source in the Federal Bureau of Investigation on March 19 seeking help in killing his black neighbor. On March 20, Lecroy was recorded on the phone talking to an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who was ostensibly in on the plot, according to the affidavit. He also asked the authority to place a "flaming cross" in his front yard and "hang his neighbor from a tree". He also reportedly sent the agent pictures of his neighbor.

"Five hundred dollars and he's a ghost", Lecroy said during the phone call, according to the court document.

An affidavit also said that Lecroy told the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent that he might have to hire more people in order to carry out the act. He could receive 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. It wasn't clear whether Lecroy has an attorney.

On April 9, Lecroy met the undercover agent in Greenwood, South Carolina, discussed "future targets", and gave the agent "a $100 cash down payment with acknowledgment that this payment was for the murder of his neighbor", the affidavit says.

Prosecutors didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. A magistrate judge ordered a psychiatric or psychological evaluation to determine whether Lecroy is competent to stand trial.
