Ebola vaccines to be shipped to Congo amid outbreak

"Our top priority is to get to Bikoro to work alongside the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and partners to reduce the loss of life and suffering related to this new Ebola virus disease outbreak", Dr. Peter Salama, WHO deputy director-general of emergency preparedness and response, said.

According to the South Sudanese health ministry, the medical team is mandated to deal with any suspected case of Ebola for emergency testing and diagnose.

The WHO is still waiting on approval from the DRC to use the experimental Ebola vaccine, but plans for deployment are already under way as officials wait for a formal decision from the country's health ministry.

It is nearly certain that we won't see a repeat of the 2014-16 West African epidemic that claimed 11,000 lives, but healthcare experts needs to act swiftly, nonetheless.

The deadly Ebola Virus Disease resurfaced in Africa once again.

The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission, either through direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood or secretions or contact with materials that are contaminated with these liquids. We don't know what causes these species jumps, which makes predicting Ebola outbreaks nearly impossible. Those who did not receive the vaccine, on the other hand, had 23 cases after 10 days or more.

The Super Eagles are due to host DR Congo in a friendly on May 28 in Port Harcourt, in the south of Nigeria, ahead of next month's World Cup. Ebola infection could look like malaria or typhoid fever, for example.

Gokhale also said that Modi's visits to cultural sites in Nepal "suggested that there should be strong people-to-people ties". PM Modi along with PM Oli jointly flagged off a bus service connecting Sita's birthplace Janakpur to Ayodhya.

Similar measures helped it contain the virus during the West African epidemic that began in 2013.

"We started well, and now we need to continue well, and we'll need the support of the entire worldwide community for this response", he said. Most outbreaks have originated in Africa or from lab accidents elsewhere, and have remained small-but people traveling from sites of a 2014 outbreak that roiled west Africa led to isolated cases in locations including the U.K., Italy, Spain and the U.S.

This is the ninth outbreak of Ebola in the Congo since the disease was first discovered in 1976.

However, research by Kent University suggests a drive to vaccinate the entire population wouldn't be an effective way of stopping the disease spread.

Nonetheless, if the vaccine succeeds in halting the outbreak, it may permanently change how the world responses to Ebola.

Although the DRC is resource poor, along with the WHO, MSF and Africa CDC, they are experience rich. It comes less than a year after an outbreak killed eight people in Congo's remote northeastern forests. But swift action is needed.
