Anwar freed from jail, declares 'new dawn' for Malaysia

Dr Mahathir further clarified that the decision was made because the new ruling coalition did not want the old regime to meddle with the affairs of the new government, reported Free Malaysia Today. "If there are new transaction trails being uncovered in Malaysia, this could impact financial institutions which had been involved in the money flows, in Singapore, Switzerland and beyond".

Wednesday's scenes made it clear that Anwar - who said he had received congratulatory calls from around the world including old friend and former United States vice president Al Gore - had lost little of his star power. Anwar said he was grateful to Malaysians "regardless of race and religion, who stood by the principles of democracy and freedom".

PKR de factor leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim believes that his release from prison was due to the efforts and struggles of his supporters for the past 20 years.

Mahathir has said he expects to run the government for up to two years during an uncertain transition period but has signaled the reins would be turned over to Anwar, who lost his parliament seat with his criminal conviction.

Anwar spent six years in jail on much-questioned charges of sodomy and abuse of power. Mahathir's move to release it comes as he seeks to tighten the net around Najib, whom he defeated in an election last week, and other officials over the multi-billion dollar scandal surrounding the fund's actions dating back some years.

Mahathir has barred Najib from leaving the country pending investigations.

Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim leaves a hospital where he is receiving treatment, ahead of an audience with Malaysia's King Sultan Muhammad V, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia May 16, 2018.

The 2 had a falling out but reunited to oust former Prime Minister Najib Razak who is embroiled in a government funding scandal.

Scientists believe lava that's been erupting is magma that's been stored in the ground since Kilauea volcano erupted 63 years ago. We know it is a distinct possibility.

"When you are incarcerated you realize what is the meaning and significance of freedom", Anwar said. Asked about their past feuds, he said "I have forgiven him", adding "why should I harbor malice against him?"

The pardon, which enables Anwar to re-enter politics immediately, was granted on the grounds that there had been a miscarriage of justice.

He was jailed again in 2015, once more on controversial sodomy charges which supporters say were a crude attempt to end his political career. The election result was a demand for change and it's the new government's responsibility to ensure that mandate is honored, he said. "There will be no special powers given except as are given to ministers or deputy ministers or deputy prime ministers", Mahathir said.

Anwar said he would take some time off with his family.

He said BN and PAS had an important role to play.

At one point he was seen in court with a black eye, and prosecutors brought out what they said was a semen-stained mattress as they alleged Mr Ibrahim had enjoyed sex with two male aides.

For years Mr Anwar headed Malaysia's opposition movement, which has just defeated the former ruling party for the first time in the country's history.
