Kia 48V Mild-Hybrid Diesel powertrain rolling out THIS year

Kia 48V Mild-Hybrid Diesel powertrain rolling out THIS year

Kia Motors will introduce its first 48V diesel mild-hybrid powertrain in the second half of 2018.

"Kia's mild-hybrid powertrain is created to fit seamlessly into consumers' lives, with no plug-in recharging required".

Connected by a belt to the diesel engine's crankshaft, under acceleration the MHSG provides up to 10kW of electric power assistance to the powertrain in "motor" mode, reducing engine load and emissions.

When decelerating, an inverter switches the current of the motor, effectively turning it into a generator to top up the 0.46kWh battery.

Kia say the big plus for the new 48V system is that it's so compact it can be easily integrated in to existing vehicle architecture (it's heading for Kia's petrol engines too) without the need to reconfigure the engine bay or lose space to a big battery.

Paired with the brand's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) active emissions control technology, the system helps reduce Carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4 percent on the new WLTP, and up to 7 percent on the NEDC, thus enabling "Kia to offer cleaner diesel engines", in their own words.

It has two different modes - motor and generate - which can modify how the system is used.

Kia says that its mild-hybrid technology can provide extra acceleration for overtaking, as well as reducing engine load when the vehicle is being driven more gently.

Kia Motors is to launch a diesel mild hybrid Sportage later this year: its first vehicle to feature this powertrain technology.

The powertrain has been engineered to deliver greater efficiency from internal combustion engines on the road, by using electric power delivered and recuperated seamlessly. According to Car Magazine, the Korean automaker is making the system available on its diesel-engine equipped Sportage and has plans to expand that to gasoline engines next year. The MHSG can then quickly restart the engine the moment the driver presses the accelerator pedal.

The EcoDynamics+ diesel mild-hybrid powertrain will help Kia offer cleaner and more frugal diesel engines.
