She had almost as many unforced errors, 25, as winners, 29.

"I remember one day, I couldn't find Olympia's bottle and I got so upset I started crying because I wanted to be ideal for her".

"So it will be a really good, another good show for me".

Ordinarily, Barty and Williams would be a second-week clash.

Serena Williams made a big statement and made a triumphant return to major championship tennis Tuesday.

Serena, who suffered life-threatening blood clots after giving birth, added: "Emotionally I think it's different, because, you know, I'm so emotionally attached to my daughter". So the suit has definitely a little functionality to it.

"I have been wearing trousers a lot when I play so I can keep the blood circulation going".

Serena says those five weeks at the academy were fabulous because she got to spend quality time with her daughter Olympia while also focusing on her tennis.

The Grand Slam champion also quipped that the outfit was "Wakanda-inspired", referring to the Marvel film Black Panther, in which numerous characters wear similar bodysuits.

Gavrilova, the women's 24th seed, battled back from a set and a service break down to defeat Romanian Sorana Cirstea 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in a niggly encounter on Tuesday. In the victory, Serena won 81 percent of her first serve points and 39 percent of her second serve points.

"And, yeah, today is one of those days where, regardless of the statistics, how I felt on court, it doesn't matter - we've got an opportunity to come out here a couple days time in round two".

Serena Williams entered the French Open as an unseeded player and her ranking fell from Np.1 to No. 451 after she had her daughter.

The last time she had been spotted on a court was in a first-round loss to Naomi Osaka in Miami in March. She backed out of the recent Madrid and Rome tournaments, saying she didn't think she was ready to play. She also addresses a comment she made in 2004 about wanting to be a smaller size. And it's good for her, because it's hard for her to play with better players and everybody needs to be challenged as much as possible to improve. "I feel like it's all going to work out". I had a baby but I am so happy to be back. "But it's a lot that goes into it with the pregnancy and with giving birth, and it's called a "miracle" for a reason".

That's why everyone had high expectations for her return-and boy did she deliver, returning to the court in a black catsuit that evoked a very powerful message.

In her on-court interview after the win, Williams explained the look.

Williams also won the Australian Open while pregnant previous year along with 22 other Grand Slams over her career.

"It's not easy to come back with everything I have been through and there has been so many other women that have been through the same thing, and we just don't talk about it".
