Mr Van der Sypt said Herman attacked officers Soraya Belkacemi, 53, and Lucille Garcia, 45, from behind, stabbing each several times before grabbing their service weapons.

The Telegraph reports that the man, aged 30, was stopped near the Café Des Augustins on the Boulevard d'Avroy for a routine police check, before he disarmed one of the officers and opened fire.

The long-term inmate had been released on Monday for a two-day leave, but failed to return.

Imaankaf Darifa, who was grabbed by armed Benjamin Herman, said: "I told him, "This is a school". The suspect was shot dead by police.

Belgium's Interior Minister Jan Jambon said the country's federal crisis centre was monitoring the situation.

Mr. Herman may have come in contact with extremist inmates, investigators say, and converted to Islam, although no firm connections to a militant terrorist organization that might have helped or encouraged him have been established...

Two women police officers were killed besides one other on Tuesday, May 29, in Liege city in eastern Belgium by a gunman.

Belgian police officers have been targeted repeatedly in recent years. A spokesperson for the Brussels prosecutor told CNN the attacker, who was shot dead by police, was 31 years old and had the initials B.H. but declined to provide the full name.

Earlier, Liege prosecutors' spokesman Philippe Dulieu said the man crept up on the two officers from behind carrying a knife and stabbed them several times.

The terror group said "he led the attack in response to calls to target the countries of the US-led global coalition", which is fighting the jihadist group mainly in Syria. "He used the weapons on the officers, who died".

He also shot dead a man sitting in a nearby vehicle.

Belgian police are holding a tribute for the victims of Tuesday's attack.

"He killed three completely innocent people with a wish to kill himself".

Justice minister Koen Geens said the attacker was a repeat offender who had been incarcerated since 2003 and was due for release in two years.

As a result, Herman ran out and crossed the road, shooting at a auto as he went.

Nevertheless, Belgium's crisis center said the country's terror threat alert would not be raised and remained at level 2 out of 4.

The gunman was shot dead by an elite police unit, prosecutors said.

Belgian authorities consider the shooting to be a terror attack. Four other officers were also injured during the operation to neutralise the assailant.

Michel said the suspect in Tuesday's attack was indirectly mentioned in state security reports on radicalization.

There was no immediate indication that the incident was terror-related.

Video posted on Twitter by a person claiming to be a witness showed people running in the area.

"We heard gunshots, then what happened is that people started screaming".
