Trump And Kim Arrive In Singapore For Unprecedented Summit

Both men have shown a predilection for grasping the palms of their fellow leaders, Trump with the likes of French President Emmanuel Macron and, more awkwardly, with British Prime Minister Theresa May. "And, for me, the best-case scenario would be, at this point, for President Trump to step back from the process and hand it over to the professional diplomats and negotiators to work out these details".

Trump spoke to a group of White House reporters in Charlevoix in the Canadian province of Quebec after cutting short his appearance at the G-7 leaders' gathering.

Their meeting, which will be held at the city-state's Capella Hotel, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting U.S. president.

That modest vision marks a break with the stratospheric goals he set after he agreed on March 8 to this meeting. North Korea is seeking a security guarantee - possibly including a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War - and the removal of the U.S.'s nuclear umbrella protecting allies South Korea and Japan.

So the summit was almost derailed by talk from Trump's hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton of a "Libya model" of disarmament. The president arrived in Asia having blown up relations with US allies - and personally with French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - over trade and Russian Federation, announcing via Twitter en route to Singapore that he'd withdraw from a joint agreement covering climate change and other issues. "It is a historic negotiation, and there is no way this president is not going to stand strong", Kudlowsaid. An invitation to visit Trump in October, coupled with a few interactions with the UN General Assembly could be most catalytic.

The US president was accompanied by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Adviser John Bolton, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly.

"I am very confident that the relationships between our countries. will continue to move forward on a strong basis", Pompeo told a news briefing ahead of an unprecedented summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

Whether they could agree to a draft document will likely determine whether Kim and Trump can sign a tangible "outcome" at the summit. I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people, and he has that opportunity.

"Wide-ranging and profound views on the issue of establishing new DPRK-U.S. relations, the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean Peninsula, the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era, will be exchanged at the DPRK-U.S. summit talks", a dispatch by the North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

The president's rhetoric has not mirrored that of his new secretary of state.

"I think the North will denuclearise. because it knows it has no other alternatives", he said.

Trump and Kim landed in a city teeming with media and onlookers of all stripes, from foreign policy analysts like Kelly and Enos to former basketball star Dennis Rodman, who claims to be a friend of the two leaders.

So just what will a successful meeting between Trump and Kim actually look like? "Give me a break, OK?" But any request for the U.S. to withdraw its 28,000 troops from South Korean bases would likely be rejected.
